Division 3 table on 11/4/1992

Despite a 9 point gap, loads of teams below the Grecians & only 6 games left. Relegation was missed by a whisker on the last day.

At the top Stoke did not get promoted..The teams going up were Birmingham, Peterborough & Brentford.

A where are they now analysis of those teams makes an interesting picture, with some wildly differing fortunes !

Harry Holman broke into the team & was a regular at the beginning of the season, without doubt one of the best all round sportsman to play for the Grecians. Sadly never fulfilled his full potential due to injury.

A very popular fella in Exeter until his untimely death at 62 in late 2020.
Told me a amusing story when as a young 19 year old Pro, he turned up for training in a new 3 litre Capri. In those days footballers at lower league clubs did not have flash new cars. Bob Saxton saw it & jumped on the bonnet, telling Harry “ I hate flash b@stards” 😁

In the photo Ken Beamish the Port Vale forward went in goal after a injury to the keeper.
Photo was from the Sunday Independent.

His father also called Harry, owned a haulage business and was rather well off. My father worked for him and I met Harry junior a few times.
One of the quickest players to play for City.

Lammie Robertson in his last appearances as a Grecian against Port Vale before his transfer to 1st Division Leicester. The just as talented Colin Randall was quickly signed from Plymouth Argyle to fill the void.

The days when the Sunday Independent was a must read for Grecian match reports from the Saturday.

Gordon Hines covered Exeter City for many years.

Express & Echo Football Final page from 14/2/1953.

A report on the reserves who played in the Southern League at the time. Sounds like difficult conditions to put it mildly in Merthyr ! 2” of snow on the pitch. Combining that with a leather ball must have been sapping.
They were made of stern stuff in those days.
