Really? As I remember it the level of violence and vindictiveness (to say nothing of racism) in and around football was way worse in the 1970s and 1980s than it is today, thankfully. And all political parties have their share of nutjobs so I'm not sure why you are singling out the SNP unless you are trying to make a crass political point - think you'll find the EDL and BNP have considerably more than their fair share, both of whom are on the extreme right.

As far as I am concerned, rivalries are what give derby matches their edge and make them so popular - I love to 'hate' Argyle as a concept, though I count some Argyle fans as my friends.
Absolutely Stroud. I'm 55 now and have witnessed the NF, BNP, British Movement, EDL and Britain first and all of them have been nasty hate fuelled thugs who've done their best to use football clubs as recruiting grounds. You just have to look at the Daily Mail to see who the real hate mongers are. Despite this those football fans have largely turned away from the violence that marred the game in the 70s and 80s. You still see a few Stone Island clad morons about singing there ill informed right wing anthems but happily they seem to prefer meeting up privately to try to kick out each others limited supply of brain cells rather than ruin other people's enjoyment by doing it inside football grounds. Much as it seems reasonable to hate these right wing idiots, most of the people I know on the left prefer to just laugh at the ****'s!

I may be misreading some of these posts, but did somebody just say that people hating Argyle are influenced by the SNP?

I dont think the level of hatred (or whatever you want to call it) was quite so intense back in Dazzas time. He played not long after the decision was made to designate the St James Road end as visitors only, and totally buggered up my regular half time mission of walking behind the Cowshed to stand behind the goal that City were attacking. Its a pity that the younger element have grown up thinking this dislike thing has always been the case. I well remember the days when City and Argyle fans stood shoulder to shoulder, and it wasnt as long ago as some might think.
As Stoudy said there was a lot of "intense rivalry" shall we call it, in the mid 70s. However this did peter out over time and matches in the 90s didn't seem to have the same level of "hooligans" attached to them.

I think it all stirred up again when we dropped to the Conference and the "we'll never play you again" messages coming from down the road.

I went to the first league game when we played them down there. The buses were stopped just outside Plymouth to be escorted in to the ground. Everyone got off for a smoke/pee and one bus disgorged a dozen or more men with EDF t-shirts. I never went again.

As Stoudy said
Who is this 'Stoudy' you speak of?

First the ECFC Music man has a pop at the Sweaties, and now you're trying to blame the English Disease on a French energy giant. It's Brexit madness I tell 'ee.

Brunt was well regarded at Gnome Park, he worked very hard, not so much a goalscorer but a player to take the weight off the attack. He was a regular and one of their best players until his injury. In a way he's going to be in the Reid, Simpson role, a targetmen, not a bad signing though well, gotta worry about the injury and how he has recovered though, perhaps that's why they are trying him out at the C and F.

Indeed. I fear this "war"* could swiftly turn nuclear!!! :( ....and uncomfortably near to us too)

Albeit with a 40 year financial guarantee that would still have to be paid long after Brexit - and without recourse to Pan-European legislation against other state owned nationalised corporations

Decent signing if his leg stays together. Not sure where this leaves Simpson.
