I was, and still am, a big fan of The Smiths.

Whilst they had what could be seen as a bit of a cult following, i don't feel that they got the wider appreciation that they deserved, but then again, i guess that they probably didn't want it.
Agreed, but The Smiths weren't everyone cup of tea.

I am a big fan but they were before my time.

However I always thought they were a massive band in the eighties so not exactly under-rated?

Phil, the charts say otherwise.

Morrissey and Marr got their recognition restrspectively.

I stand corrected - but were they not NME darlings?

At least before the Union Jack business etc...

They were but that was at a time when NME, like The Smiths, were seen as "alternative".

They never had great chart success so didn't appeal to the masses who were too busy chasing A-Ha and Spandau Ballet.

Tis a shame there will never be a chance for The Smiths to reform.

I believe there is a lot of bad blood between Morrisey and Mike Joyce the drummer.

Morrisey has never held back his contempt for him. Something over owing Royalties or something which ended up in court I believe.

Not massive but equally not really under-rated. They made 4 studio albums with 3 going to number 2 and 1 topping the chart.

No single charted higher than 10 but 16 top 30 singles is still pretty successful.

Just missed Mozza playing in Londonbecause of his illness (gutted!)

Swanny, given that you have mentioned both the Wonder Stuff and Midlake recently, I think your music taste is spot on.

Turin Brakes
Richard Hawley
Charlatans
Drugstore
Mazzy Starr

Quality! :)

Both The Smiths and Morrisey music is the sort of thing I think you grow into as you get older and understand it better.
