In RaWZ we trust....Amen.
3rd May 1976

A Question of Sport with Henry Cooper & Fred Truman as captains. One of the guests was Northamptonshire & England cricketer David Steele, who’d made his Test Debut at the age of 33 the previous Summer against Australia. Coming out to bat on his Test debut he looked a lot older than he actually was with his premature grey hair & wearing steel film glasses..Aussie pace bowler Jeff Thomson quipped...”Bloody Hell, who’ve we got. Groucho Marx” Steele had the last laugh for the rest of the series. Only played in 8 Tests 1975-76. Had a very respectable test average of 42.

Apparently one newspaper headline read, "The Bank Clerk Goes To War".

Incredible to think he batted wearing glasses with no head protection against the most fearsome pace attacks in the world in those two series.
Steele was surprisingly not selected for the 1976/77 tour of India. It was thought a better player of spin was the preferred option. Derek Randall had a good tour, coming in at 3 iirc, of course played a magnificent innings in the one off Test at the MCG hence was then a ‘shoe in’ for the 1977 series. Steele never had a look in after that.

Watched a bit of the 1977 series again on YouTube. Watching the players walk when they knew they’d got a nick...Except Boycs of course 😁

Yep...Different game back then...Botham in his first Test knock walked only to be called back because Rod Marsh told the umpire he was not 100% sure the ball carried.
The Boycott incident when Marsh caught him off the bowling of Ray Bright. A faint tickle. It was noticeable after Boycott got his 100, that the only 2 players not to congratulate or applaud Boycott were Marsh & Bright.

Ahhh, dear old Boycs...

Boycott - "Why do people always take an instant dislike to me?'

Unnamed teammate - "Well, it just saves them time Geoffrey."

Friday so London Weekend TV take over from Thames at 7pm. Most ITV Regions have the LWT Production of ‘Who Will Win the Cup ?’ hosted by Brian Moore. It was Leeds v Sunderland the next day. All the pundits on the programme ended up with egg on their faces after understandably predicting a easy Leeds win.

Aye..Never realised he’d already been awarded a OBE that far back.
Always reminds me of a mate of mine who wrote into
Jim’ll Fix It, asking to do the drumming for one of Gary Glitters productions !

Just started watching Shardlake on the Disney channel.A four part Tudor whodunnit based on the books of the late C J Samson.Came upon it accidentally in my channel trawling , surprisingly good., I’m now about halfway through.Sean Bean plays Thomas Cromwell , with Anthony Boyle ( Masters of the Air ) as Jack Barek and Arthur Hughes as Shardlake the Tudor detective.
