If you're aim is the top 10, you've probably got a bottom half budget, haven't you. I doubt clubs with the 10th biggest budget are setting their ambitions at 10th.

Bristol Rovers' accounts were not detailed enough for Kieran Maguire to include in the chart below, but this nevertheless provides an interesting insight to budgets at L1.

Do you really think that Matt Taylor is the sort of manager who is "happy to be bumbling along in mid table" ? Quite clearly you were completely blind to his highly competitive nature as both a player and manager whilst with us !
I’m sure Matt/Rovers are ambitious and have a target of Championship football. Signing Kite and Hartridge wouldn’t appear compatible with that aim!

I suppose you can only spend what you’re given.
Plus a squad even that’s pushing for promotion from League One needs a few solid citizens in there to go alongside their higher earning star players.

Not sure how legit this is, but if it can be believed, I'm surprised how low MK dons are. Thought they spent a lot of money, badly, rather than being relatively financially limited.

The guy that pulled this together, Kieran Maguire, is an academic specialising in football finances. The data comes from the published accounts of each club. I think the caveat is that the wages are not necessarily limited to players and may include commercial, grounds, ticketing etc.

That is what I thought about Pompey this year, they made some real average looking signings from the outside in the summer. Clearly they haven't proven to be average. It's all about the squad as whole and you need solid pros like Hartridge and Kite in these squads, even if they aren't starting every game.

This. The published figures must include coaching and non-footballing staff (our players wages bill cannot be anywhere near £5M, and our management costs are not high).

Clubs presumably still have to report their P1 (players wages) line to the EFL every 6 months and are then told their ranking compared to the others in their division but no actual figures. Under the old SCMP regime L1 clubs were supposed to spend 60% or less of their "qualifying turnover" on P1. Many must be exceeding this by a large margin, but we don't hear of any sanctions.
