The virus isn’t going away,so lockdowns are just kicking it down the road, ridiculous !
It's not even a full lockdown either.

Are they stopping people from entering or leaving the country? No. Are they shutting the schools? No. Are they stopping people from leaving their homes? No.

It's just trimming around the edges again in the hope to flatten a curve. A curve that will go up again once lockdown is eased and the merry go round resumes. And they're only trying to flatten the curve because they think they might not have enough hospital beds. Meanwhile airport hangers made into Nightingale hospitals at great expense gather dust.

A new way is needed.

Usual shithouse trick of preparing people for bad news rather than governing yourself. Dreadful

Is it all government by leak now?
It has been for some time Pete. Predating Boris, even the Tory government.

When was the last announcement made by a leader here the content of which wasn't known beforehand? I'm struggling to remember.

No chance of a new way Jinxy. The only club in the bag is the broken Lockdown iron. Expect the ball to be sliced into the rough several times over the next 5 months.

I wonder if Boris will survive the week? Lockdown only gets through on Labour votes? Starmer's price for the votes is Boris steps aside?

Boris and Donald dethroned in the same week?

Stranger things have happened.

I thought I did respond when I said that you need to compare like with like. To be an advocate of the Taiwan or NZ approach you have to own the fact these countries have a zero covid policy and have all but shut themselves off from the rest of the world. Are you and Elgy suggesting the U.K. does that?
Taiwan and NZ are not like-for-like either. Taiwan is 4 times the size of NZ - the UK is 3 times the size of Taiwan. It's scalable - or 'ramp-uppable'. - we have the resources to do it.

The horse has bolted; we blew the advantages of geographic isolation and the 4-week notice from Italy, we are where we are. So what do we do ?

- 2 month stictly enforced lockdown to bring down infection rate dramatically (it works)
- Use that valuable time to fine tune the world-beating track and trace system - throw everything (useful) at it.
- Adopt S Korean/Italy model of airport/port screening/testing (negates the need for quarantine)
- Open up slowly - react quickly and efficiently to any local flare-ups.
- Get back to life as they've been enjoying in NZ and Taiwan for quite some time now.

Trump dethroned and the Johnson walks. He's boxed in, nowhere to go with any shred of credibility remaining. Excuse the pun !

The horse never left the stables Elgy. NZ/Taiwan style isolation was never an option, not least because the U.K. is not an island, for example we have a million or so ‘Brits’ in NI who share another Island with another sovereign country of 5 million people, who incidentally we have common travel area with. Lest we forget the 4 million EU citizens resident here and their families in Europe who I think have a reasonable expectation that they can come and go as they please without the forced quarantine internment protocols they have in NZ to hammer home their zero Covid policy. There is no zero Covid without quarantine.

Isn’t another national lockdown stated Labour policy?
