Regarding the NHS. Shocked to see a story today of a woman who was told she had cancer, endured multiple treatments including chemo etc, lost her job and suffered greatly mentally and then got told by another doctor that she didn't have cancer after all, but something else.

She was awarded just over 75k in compensation, which i find insulting.

To balance it out however, my GP rang me today out of the blue to check if i was ok and to give me an update on my blood tests and referral to a specialist rheumatology centre in the North West that specifically deal with auto immune and rare genetic conditions. Really appreciated that.

In addition, i rang the secretary of the surgeon who is doing my hernia surgery at a North East hospital who was back off annual leave to clarify some outstanding questions i had and to confirm my appointment details etc and she was really helpful.

On the flipside of that, i rang Cambridge Addenbrookes hospital the other day about another referral and spoke to a member of the reception team who was really unhelpful, inaudible and could barely string a sentence together.

I guess it's swings and roundabouts and what i have learned to do now is to highlight something i'm not happy with as and when it happens instead of taking the complaint home with me and festering with it which is what i usually do and making myself and the situation worse. If you mention something you aren't happy with at the time it happens, for example me requesting to speak to a different reception person rather than have to put up with one who clearly isn't up to the job on that particular call, then it can lead to far less stress and a problem being rectified straight away rather than it lead to further stress and complications down the line.

I was harsh on the NHS overall. In the main it's fantastic and has some fantastic people going beyond the call of duty and perhaps it's more helpful for me to address the individuals concerned with regards to anything i'm not happy with rather than let frustration and anger impair my view of the whole organization, unfairly. Treat as you find in other words.

So, we've got a day out to Whitley Bay next week as a family to stretch our legs before heading off to the hospital for the appointment. Then driving home again. All completely socially distanced of course.

Blood tests at the doctors and hospital appointments are the new going out!! :D

I think today it finally feels that i am moving forward with my treatment under the NHS which has been stuttering and stalling for far too long, even before Covid and come the summer i hope t be in a massively better place - even IF restrictions are still here. Fingers crossed.
My take on the NHS is that it's a game of two halves:

The specialist care one can receive is amongst the best you can get pretty much the world over.

The frontline service however is amongst the worst.

Scraping away the outer layers to get to the inner core is an art in itself. It takes a while to master.

It's a fair point Mr Jinx and a situation which i myself have nearly gone insane trying to achieve. To wade through the wood to be able to see the trees and get into the clearing. This in itself is like a war of attrition and i have personally experienced that.

I think someone on here remarked that the NHS was such a cumbersome monolith which makes it hard to get through the layers to get things sorted. The levels of flexibility needed aren't there in many cases. If i can ask, if what ways do you think the frontline service is bad?

I rarely ever see a doctor myself, but my wife & children have varying health issues and she is on the phone at least once a day, sometimes more, to some branch or other of the NHS. I don't think a day goes by when I don't get to hear a sentence start "You'll never guess what they've done now...."

So that's the one side. The flip side I've also seen, and once my eldest got put into the care of Great Ormond Street (when he needn't have really, his condition wasn't that bad or so we thought), I was blown away by the care they gave us. No stone was left unturned and the service was phenomenal; I'll never forget it. Neither will I forget the conditions of lots of the other children in the GOSH waiting rooms. It really does make you count your blessings; there but for the grace....etc...

The longer this indecision by the government goes on,the more the population of this country will get agitated and eventually that will lead to social unres !

To be honest, i think we could be in lockdown for another 5 years and people wouldn't kick off. They much prefer to phone radio talk shows or write strongly worded letters to their MP's than getting their hands dirty.

We'd be the last country in Europe to start really showing how we feel sadly. The Government know this and thus are able to get away with anything.
