There is a chance to see a "Saint" in action at the West Somerset Railways Spring Spectacular Gala (Friday 28th April-Monday 1st May). The GWS rebuild "Lady of Legend" is one of the first two visiting locos to be confirmed along with Erlestoke Manor. It promises to be a bit of a "Manor Fest" with residents Foxcote and Odney Manors also in action.

The Lady herself! Great picture from the GWS at Didcot.

The Great Western were years ahead of their rivals in the Edwardian era.

Those were really magnificent looking engines. (y)

Even more elegant than a rebuilt Merchant Navy :)

Talking of rebuilt MNs, 35018 British India Line is due to pass thru Exeter twice on April 15th on the 1st leg of the Great Britain Railtour. It runs Paddington to Plymouth and then back to Bristol. I don't know the timings yet however.

Be interesting to see how it makes it's way back over the South Devon banks after the "locals" have nicked the wheels? 🤣

Sadly there was a local case of "nicking" off a Bulleid pacific on Xmas Day 1963. Unrebuilt Battle of Britain 34066 was stationed in the yard at a pretty deserted Exmouth Junction Shed, and some "herbert or herberts" unknown stole one of it's nameplates. This was quite a feat as it required access behind the air smoothed casing to reach the fixing bolts. It caused quite a furore. The Shed and former Southern Region lines in the area had been taken under Western Region control, and the WR were busily running down services and closing lines in order to preserve former the former GWR structure against the worst excesses of the Beeching Report. When SR steam locos were withdrawn they were returned to their former owners for further use or scrapping. There was no way that the WR were going to "lose face" by sending one back minus a nameplate, and for the same reason they were not going to ask Eastleigh Works for a replacement using the existing pattern ! They duly had Swindon Works produce a new pattern and replacement nameplate, before returning the loco some months later ! :)
