20p In 1973 when this advert was printed is around £2.30 in todays money.
The cost of a packet of 20 cigarettes now is anywhere between £10-£13.

Cigarette machines on the side of newsagents etc, Spent my dinner money for packet of 10 ciggies. They'd be totally ripped off and stolen if they around nowadays.
Which neatly got around the problem of buying cigarettes when under age, though the newsagent on Magdalen Road didn't bother with!

LOTS of things we don't see any more.
(Love the commentary by "Mr Cholmondeley-Warner")

Many newsagents were never bothered about selling fags to under 16's It was probably a good earner for them.

I wonder when the law came in banning the sale of tobacco to under 16s(18 now) ?

I can’t remember it in the 1970s.
Children getting their parents fags was very common back then...

Guessing it was in the early 1980s ????

I reckon you could be right Olds, When the real effects of smoking were starting to be common knowledge in the public domain.

Back in the late 60s I remember the shop up the road from Exmouth School used to sell single ciggies at break time to any kids who wanted (and could afford) them.
IIRC correctly every 10 or 20 worked out about four times the price of a packet.
As you say, a good earner!

It’s incredible when you think back now about smoking being the norm on the bus or coach whilst travelling.
The upstairs of a Double Decker was a fog of smoke on cold days when the windows were shut.
