Yeah, it's a bit of a surprise. I don't think he was even in the running. I didn't see his name linked with them.
From the outside Charlton appear a bit dysfunctional. I don't think they've managed to cut free from their previous owner, who (I think) still owns the ground and trianing ground. This time last year they appointed Nigel Adkins, he went and they've already burned through another young manager since then. I get they'd be an attractive job - and presumably Garner has links in London from his time at Palace - so perhaps that's another draw; but I'm struggling at this stage to see how Garner fits with the players they've got in their first team squad. That said, I'm frequently wrong.

The owner's son is head of their recruitment and academy even though he has no prior footballing knowledge : this probably means what he says, goes.
I can't see Matt enjoying that kind of set-up, although of course it's possible he could work well together with the son.
It's a problem for any manager leaving City, considering the autonomy they are allowed and the non-corporate approach.

Now thought to be Swindon's Ben Garner off to Charlton.

Came out of nowhere but seems like it’s a done deal.
