Do yourself a favour and get rid of AVG. It's resource heavy and is awful at picking up new attacks.
Look up NOD32 from eset. About £35 a year if you don't want to trawl through the net for dodgy validation details. It's lightweight and is proven to be the most effective of all the AV programs. Only reason it's not well known is because PC World haven't set up a deal with it!
AU, they have different rendering engines which can have different effects on sites, a lot of sites will be designed with IE and FF in mind, and nowadays they're all very similar, but some are more robust than others and FF has some nice developers features for us techies!
I actually quite like IE8 as well. They've fixed a lot of the IE7 bugs, which might be the reason behind the OP problem!
