I'm really glad these rumours are out in the open, as even if it doesn't happen this time, the Russian people will know there are powerful groups within Russia who are prepared to act, and that may encourage others as well. A bit of groundswell around this is just what is needed right now.

There is a sort of mirror image of the Cold War confrontation in the current situation. Then, in the 70s and 80s, it was NATO's threat of nuclear response (aka deterrence) that was seen as the means to keep Soviet conventional superiority at bay. Now, NATO has conventional superiority but is unwilling to intervene directly because of the threat of a Russian nuclear response.

The difference - and why the current situation is so dangerous - is that a real war, not a cold one, is already being fought. The risk of escalation is very real.
