From reviewing the footage I’ve come to the conclusion that Cox did indeed want/call for the ball in photo 1. But the ball from Cole was slightly in front of Cox (photo 2), which meant he had to stretch for the ball. If you watch the footage you can this in action.

It came out of nowhere???? Now it might be just me but from the picture above I'd say Sonny was asking for the ball.
Yes, the situation emerged from nowhere. He called for th ball but had less awareness of what was behind him than he would have had the attack built in a normal way. IMO.
