If these new “measures “ are so important why wait to Tuesday ?

Travel restrictions might need a bit of time for folk to change plans but not for face coverings.

Probably because businesses would start dripping about having no time to start policing the wearing of masks again or some such gripe. A feature of this whole pandemic has been the propensity of some to whinge whatever the government announces or indeed the timings within.

So most of the worlds governments got together and decided to ignore a new variant for 5 months just so they could announcement its existence last week?
That’s a conspiracy theory too far for me I’m afraid.

It's not clear at all. Seems to me, to be 2 separate items have been merged.

GMB were very disappointed today, They had the Dr from S Africa who "Found" this new variant and they expecting her to give out doom and gloom but all she said was so far they were very mild symptoms, Ms Reid and Mr Shephard tried their best to say "Its the end of the world" but as usual a Dr says it how it is, Without over hyping things. Expect another "Expert" to give them a story they want to hear very soon to try to scare us all.

The Observer described the South African scientists who detected the new variant as "heroic". A tad OTT I think. All part of their job.

Some S African diplomat said calling it the "S African variant" (Before they changed it to Omicrom) was "Unfair" Mind plenty were happy to call one of the variants the "UK Variant" Before it was renamed the Delta Variant.
