Not a Brazil knocker just know it is a very violent country and after the World Cup it will not be safe. That said I have been there and been to Rio so no need for me to return having seen all the sights...however I was in a party with an armed guard all the time (4 soldiers)...I was not there on a budget walking around with a football shirt on.
FFS..... You a multimillionaire or got Rio mixed up with Kabul or Baghdad? Rio is no different from any other big city, stay in the 'touristy' areas keep your wits about you don't dress too flashy or stagger around pi$$ed & you'd be very unlucky to have any major problems.... Keep taking the Valium!!

I am not a tourist and I cannot dress poorly...different standards. You'll be OK though Barum... Primark seconds don't look out of place in any favela. No different from Barnstaple really

Spent over 3 weeks in Rio as a backpacker staying in hostels and had an amazing time, including some great nights out. Such a fun city to visit and plenty of great sights to see. At no point did I feel at all threatened and the weather was awesome!

Also travelled on public transport from the Argentinian border to a few other places in Brazil and enjoyed that, as well.

It's a shame the history isn't linked with Argentina, though. What a country! Amazing scenary, wine, food, and far cheaper than Brazil for much better quality. Shame we didn't play Boca or River all those years ago :)

There is a link, Willy:
... Argentina’s fledgling football community sent the English FA a request for a team to visit them and play some local teams. Exeter City FC was chosen as being a ‘truly representative side’.
It was only after successful games in Argentina that matches in Brazil were hastily organised. ...

Ahhh, now I understand, you're a snob..... So you are quite right, when I was there I didn't see any English showing off their glad rags thinking they were better than the locals............No wonder you needed a armed escort.

That's quite an old link, Hants. Never been sure whether it meant that the packages had sold out to ECFC fans or whether the unsold provisional booking that the Club took out have been returned to Thomas Cook and now sold out to the general holidaymaker. I presume the latter as the former would have been trumpeted long and loud by now.
