Goog Hoskin, no contest. Goog held the County Ground track record for many years from 1954, with a time of 72 seconds dead. In the early 60's the promoters from that time, Geoff Pymar and Cyril Roger, even got World Champion Barry Briggs in to try and beat Googs record at the County Ground. Goog had achieved his record in a regular four man race, Briggs went onto the track solo, without the concerns of three other riders around him, yet even under those circumstances, Briggs could only equal Googs record of 72 dead!
I was priveledged to become a friend of Googs, and we'd often talk about those good old days at the County Ground, when it wasnt uncommon for there to be a 10,000+ attendance at a bank holiday meeting.
Sadly, Googs no longer with us, and I'm truly sorry that I didnt maintain contact with him like I should have. Although he wouldnt have wanted it, I'll fly the flag for him as long as I can.
