Just going back to Sutcliffe, someone recently told me about the time he met Frank Bruno. It all sounded a little bizarre until i found out who had arranged it.

I stood on the Gelderd End when that tape was played to the crowd for identification purposes, that was chilling.

It was a hoax that the police insisted on following. The grim joke 6 months after he had been caught was that Sutcliffe had escaped from prison, police asked people to be on the lookout for a bloke with a Geordie accent.
Sunderland fans at Roker Park would chant "[name] is the ripper" and other tasteless references, at the time.

At Elland Rd the sick chant of ‘Ripper 13 Coppers 0’was heard from a alarmingly large group of Neanderthals...Sadly a similarly embarrassing chant about the Yorkshire Ripper to Barnsley fans behind the goal at SJP in Nov 1980 from some in the T Stand ☹

Same ilk of the Harry Roberts chants that are often aimed at police around a few grounds back along.

Sad news, Des was a great example of somebody in showbiz who wasn't "up himself", he knew he was lucky and enjoyed it. RIP.

Des O’Connor was at the top of the all round entertainment game for decades.
A easy going style meant he could slot into many different entertainment situations seamlessly.

Loved the time he was a guest on Morecambe & Wise 😁

He was one of the last old school entertainers who did the Red Coat thing, He was also part of that group in the early days of ITV that people loved, He was great on his chat shows and was always in stitches when he interviewed comedians on his sofa on the show, Was also a popular singer which, Like you say Morecambe & Wise used as the butt of their jokes. Loved watching him in the 70's & 80's. Sadly they're all passing on now, You just forget how old these guys are.
