Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin says he will not seek re-election as president in 2027.
He told a press conference after today’s Uefa Congress: “I will not run in 2027 anymore. I was away from my family for three more. My family knew it first.”
The surprise news came barely an hour after Ceferin had been given the freedom to stand for election in 2027 at Uefa Congress in Paris.
The Football Association had been the only association to oppose the change in statutes.
Uefa general secretary Theodore Theodoridis said Ceferin’s decision not to tell the national associations beforehand was not an embarrassment for the FA.
“I don’t think so,” he said. “We have a democracy.”
