The sound of a railway semaphore signal dropping. When I lived at the bottom of Monks Rd,I knew it was 0720 when the one up from Polsloe Bridge clunked for line clear.
Ahem, the semaphore signals were Shirley of the Southern variety which were "upper quadrant" and raised for all clear, and dropped to horizontal to show danger ? Unless of course the Western Region went to the expense of replacing them ?

A Western Region signal CB.....If the signalman was busy at the Exmouth Junction box, the DMU would sometimes be waiting at the signal for a couple of minutes before the hooter was sounded just to remind him. The clunk usually happened soon after the toot.

It was still in use well into the 1990s.

Well all you can hear at Exmouth Junction nowadays is the ringing of the tills at Morrisons.
