TWO bumbling Exeter City football fans have been banned from all branches of Debenhams for three years after being caught stealing three of the department store's 'Blue Cross' sale stickers, which they mistakingly thought were actually blue squares. The hapless pair had planned to wave the stickers in the direction of rival Plymouth Argyle supporters at tomorrow's Devon derby at Home Park. But, they were caught by trained security staff who used body language training and state-of-the-art CCTV to catch the pair red-handed.
The two soccer-mad clowns had thought up the idea having trolled local football forums overnight in which excitable Exeter fans were preparing for their away cup final at Argyle.
Talk of taking as many 'blue squares' as possible to the vital League Two match certainly caught the imagination of the Grecian followers. Argyle are surprisingly caught in a fight to avoid relegation to the Blue Square Premier; a non-league division in which Exeter themselves enjoyed several seasons of even greater mediocrity in the early part of the century.
Barry ******** from Pathfinder Village and Darren Pratt from Pinhoe admitted three counts of cardboard and paper media theft from the Debenhams store in Sidwell Street, Exeter on March 16th.
Banning the pair from all Debenhams stores and online sites for a period of three years, Judge James Brent sent out a warning to anyone willing to steal and the importance of doing proper research. "These thick individuals failed to understand the difference between a square and a cross, and now they have paid for that with a hefty ban from a well-known department store."
The Devon Expressway derby and the importance of it has certainly caught the imagination of Exeter's football loving public. Sales of blue felt tip pens and acrylic poster paints have increased by 3% on the same period last year, while at least 300 City supporters are expected at the game on Saturday (1pm). Argyle are expected to win.
• There is still room on the official Exeter City supporters bus that leaves from the Old Tiverton Road end of St James's Park stadium at 11am. Highway officials have since reopened the road following a landslide of plant pot earth and rusting galvanise that caused the road's closure for two weeks.
