Yeah that was the way teams were laid out back then, see programme below, from a similar era, for traditional line up. Oddly players fell into different positions, according to tactics, immediately after kick off, even the ball moved around a bit.



Are you saying that Alan Ball played right wing Bobby Charlton played left wing, and, as it turned out Nobby Stiles was centre forward?
Further to chat on another thread. I think Keith Newton was playing for England whilst in the second tier.

Coincidentally, Nobby Stiles scored the only goal of the game ! A friendly in the Feb before the World Cup '66.
