So what actually happened then to delete the last year or so?
Lionel homes in on the unanswered question.

Will the missing posts be restored ?

It's looking unlikely I'm afraid. One learn from the exercise though - regular offsite backups are absolutely essential. And I should have known better. Complacency on my part.

From Monday/Tuesday (as soon as I can get it implemented) we will be backed up nightly, offsite, with every backup kept for 30 days. As well as this, members of the Exeweb team will be downloading the most recent backup at least once a week so as well as the backup being kept offsite (but still in 'the cloud'), we'll have local copies too. In the meantime I have been manually backing up daily.

It's far from ideal. And I'm very, very sorry. Doing everything I can to move things forward from where we are and ensure it can never happen again.

... and as the sticky thread mentions - we have moved to a very supportive specialist host:- http://www.nimbushosting.co.uk/forum-hosting/vbulletin/

The reality is it isn't anyone's fault. Just the coming together of several things, that as a whole, made Exeweb an ex-Exeweb, or an Exe without the web, if you like.
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

These things happen and you put in your time to keep this site going which we all appreciate. Perhaps you should have 'fessed up earlier though Liam.

I don't disagree with you. I'm all for being honest and I'm happy to hold my hands up and say I should have done better with the contingency planning! (This certainly won't be an error of judgement I will repeat!) But I wanted to be in a position where I knew more about the likelihood (or not) of data recovery and have also been focussed on bringing Exeweb back ASAP and building things back up. We'll get there - and as I have said - this will not happen again on my watch.

On hiatus.

But what was there to 'fess up'? There was a data loss. It wasn't recoverable. That's been a consistent explanation ...

No. It was suggested that the problems were circumstantial. See for example Spanky's post. Those explanations lacked credibility and Liam has now correctly acknowledged this.

The attempted cover up is always worse than the initial error, as well as doomed to failure.

Pack it in Al

Do you not realised how gutted we were when it happened?? That I was devastated that all our hard work had gone down the pan like that??

We work extremely hard to give everyone a fantastic user experience, and all that work gone in one hour!!!. We keep the site running everyday with little downtime, excess money is ploughed into club projects.. we strive to be professional and a flaw within our work meant loss of data.. Every site we created gone... now we are rebuilding it as quickly as we can.. long days and drinking coffee at 4 in the morning means we were not down for more than 36 hours.. why did we do this? because we pride ourselves on being a voice to the fans of ecfc.. giving you the place to voice you opinions!!

No one needed to "fess" anything. There was no cover up... It was a flaw, it bit us hard and it hurt... now we have addressed all issues and have created ways that backups will be taken every week so no loss of data will every happen again..

We now move forward..... can you Al?

To try and go some way towards apologising for this debacle, Rae will be pleased to know new emoticons will be arriving soon.
