I assumed the reduction to 8,219 was temporary, but it doesn’t sound like it.

I have to agree. Might as well say the capacity is 10,000

Tend to agree. You wouldn't say the capacity of a lift was 40 if accommodating that number of people meant they'd all likely suffocate. Surely, the capacity of something, especially a stadium, is the number of people who can be safely accommodated?!

In that case I’d say the capacity isn’t 8,700 then.
My personal calculation of the true current capacity is also 8,200 or so, but separation barriers, unusable places etc makes even this notional. The figure for the Port Vale game will give us a better number.

Isn’t it 14,000 now they’ve extended?

I assume that's if all the attendance is home supporters. For a football match there would presumably need to be more separation between home and away fans than is normal for egg chasing games. Never been to Sandy Park so not sure about how 1,500 away fans could be stewarded...

This is all getting a bit mad now. Its only a few weeks since we had less than 4000 home fans for a game against Crawley, and now we are leaving SJP to go to Sandy Park. 😆 just enjoy the ride folks

It's explained in the Club statement - to keep walkways free and so people feel less crushed. I think the Green Guide also recognised that people are on average bigger than they were a generation ago.
But the walkways we there when the capacity were set
Maybe people are bigger but I bet the mix has changed there are certainly more women going now
