Not true. My father was born there and never referred to it as such.
I'm sure the natives won't be impressed about it being referred to as a suburb. Morice Parsons will be spinning in his grave!

Topsham v Topsum

One of those pointless arguments we seem to love so much. When I lived in the town it was the subject of much debate but my experience was that some well-heeled people favoured the "local" pronunciation and equally some locals the "posh" version.

This tension is at least 250 years old. In 1759 Andrew Brice's Grand Gazetteer, or Topographic Dictionary described it as :

"a very pleasant, a considerable, and flourishing Place, inhabited by many Persons of good Fashion and Politeness, as well as Ship-masters, Ship-builders, etc etc" and

"no despicable or mean Town"

My dad and grandparents always pronounced it Topsum.
