Green pitch, cloud cover, light indifferent. Bowler friendly conditions. Very difficult to bat. Why on earth did Hampshire choose to bat ?
Head scratcher for sure, but Somerset choosing to toss suggests they'd have batted first too.

Yes that was what they said on the wireless this morning.

The suggestion was that it will be like the Surrey game last week (similar pitch and conditions) where the first innings scores were 149 and 162 and then Hampshire scored a shed load second knock but against wayward Surrey bowling that Somerset are most unlikely to repeat.

82 year old Darren Stevens scores a ton. There's hope for me yet.

What, like the headline "100 year old Jason H scores 82"? :p

Anyway, in more pressing news Hants' (not the red variety) battle through to 196 all out. Essex pick up a couple of (relatively) early wickets against Sorry.

A Sherlock might say, "the game is afoot!"

Dawson and Barker's 92 run partnership checks Somerset's charge. but Hant's 196 all out at tea off 58.4 overs. Bowling bonus points hoovered up.

Looking at the morning highlights the pitch is so green to almost be indistinguishable from the outfield if it wasn't for the footholds around the creases. Noticeable how less green it looks in the afternoon although that might be due to a different camara angle. Hopefully it has flattened out and Somerset can get 300+.

Stevens hit 140 in the afternoon session for Kent, leaving him 191 not out at tea.

Steven Mullaney of Notts, someone I see as being signed up for TMS once he retires (when he isn't playing he often commentates and is very good), also went postal in scoring 173 before getting out before tea.

Not sure that these batsmen from the sub continent are proving a hit on late season wickets ? Hmmmm.
