Yep. Fair comment, but some player do develop somewhat later rather than sooner (dare one mention the great Kellow as a possible example)

Whereas other "early bloomers" sadly wither away after early early promise.
I would love to see Matt Jay really establish himself as he gives his all.

As regards the early bloomers, we lose some to the predators rather than them withering away. Hardly ever saw Jordan Storey before he was whisked away.

Not wanting to do Matt Jay down but comparison with Storey and Collins is just wrong. They were newbies. Matt has been around a long time and has not cemented a place in the team.
Going on the MT interview after yesterday match it sounds unlikely that Matt Jay will be starting at Lincoln on Tuesday even if Law is not fit either....can’t remember exactly what he said but words along the line of not suitable against a team like that!!

Rather sweeping last para there Al, but going back through the 1970-2000s era we did have a share of "young, free talents" coming through what we had then as a youth set up who, despite early promise, managed somehow (either through over-inflated ego or, simply, peeing it against a wall) ended up outside the pro game.

It would be unfair to name names (as many were, and still are, local) but we did have a number coming through the ranks that just couldn't quite hack it in the bigger leagues.

Yeah, but after a couple of laps he'd be exhausted.

I think Matt Jay is going to become a helluva player for us. His technique is superb. This is just the start for him.
Let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves, eh? It was a decent goal that he had to work for but it’s not like we’re seeing this every time he’s on the pitch.

I've always seen something in Matt Jay and have been criticised on here because of it. He works hard, is good on the ball and takes a decent set piece, he has rattled the woodwork many time and snatched at other opportunities that have come his way, he seems to have found a little more composure in his recent performances as a midfielder. His only disadvantages are his size and strength. Size he can't do much about, but the last few times he has played, he has looked much stronger on the ball and willing to get stuck in to a tackle too. He hasn't been getting much first team football, but has been in and around the matchday squad under both Taylor and Tisdale, the players all seem to rate him too.

After yesterdays game, I'd say he deserves a start against Lincoln and if it isn't working we can bring on Boateng, either way, Jay now offers us something from the bench which we have been lacking for the first 3/4 of the season and that's a creative terrier to play in behind the strikers (guess Lee Martin also falls in that category too). People will still groan when they hear his name, I think it's a shame he never got the backing like our other academy players have had.

And top covering by Sweenz too - certainty covered for little Christie's "lack of stretch" there!

When are the dubious goals committee going to strip that one from Taylor? Was going a fair way wide....
