Fifteen students at Exeter University have been left with permanent scars after branding themselves with heated coat hangers.
The "group challenge" at a house party saw each student brand themselves with the initial of the hall they lived in last year.
Participants held a reshaped metal coat hanger to heat on a hot stove for 30 seconds. Individually, they then took turns to have the burning metal pressed against their chests for ten seconds.
After visiting hospital, at least three of the branded were given antibiotics to fight infection. A burns specialist also warned they will have permanent scarring.
One of the branded men, who asked not to be named, told student newspaper Exepose: "We are a tight group, all very close friends. It wasn't a spontaneous thing, we had talked about it before."
He added that the whole episode was viewed as a "group challenge" and that within the group of friends there is "a bit of a daredevil culture."
A spokeswoman for Exeter University said it would not be investigating the matter.

Any idea what part of the body they tried to brand themselves on ?

I know of a similar thing from years ago where one young lad was persuaded whilst drunk to try to extinguish a Flaming Sambuca and that the glass could then be stuck to his chest by the suction caused. He now has a rather impressive circular scar centred around his left nipple.

I thought the bit where it says hot metal on the chest was a bit of giveaway.

Fuss about nothing I am afraid, some bits of life hurt, I have broken more bones and created permanent damage playing various sports than I care to remember, and please don't try and tell me that hurting people was not the specific object of the exercise.

The report I read in the paper yesterday said the uni weren't investigating any further as the burns and pain they were left with was punishment enough!! :)

Exeweb legend Scaramanaga and I once had a "who can sit on the electric hob on the oven longest" competition. He won, for the record.

I once burnt myself with a clipper lighter, you turn it upside down so that the flame heats the metal then you press it against your skin to create a smiley.

I was hard (apparently)

Tada
