It's usually a club option; otherwise there's no need for it. It's worth noting, however, that in some cases the club activating the optional year will be in the players' favour - i.e. on enhanced personal terms.

Nope. The club can exercise their option on a player, although, we will obviously have to meet the terms of that option. It’s possible that Jules negotiated a pay rise should we extend his deal.
