Jimmy Greaves aged 81. I'm too young to have known him as a player but his stats are extraordinary, and I loved him Saint & Greavsie and the like in the 80s and 90s.

One of his last public speaking engagements before he was taken seriously ill with a stroke was at SJP a few years back.

He was just finishing his career when I began following football. His record spoke for itself.
We all loved his relaxed style on TV with Ian St John.
He is back with ‘The Saint’ somewhere.

Saint and Greavsie was an enjoyable watch, but in a way it creates a misleading impression, because for both of those great players there's a lot more TV footage of them in the studio than on the pitch. Greaves was at his peak even before the 1966 World Cup, scoring about 3 goals a season ... on telly.

The best English striker ever? Probably. RIP.

Actually he scored 4 goals in this one game ... though the defending was generous!

Certainly remember his hatrick against us in the FL Cup at White Hart Lane in 1968. We lost 6-3, although we had led 1-0, and again at 2-1. Whenever he was put through the middle his pace meant that inevitably the ball ended up in rhe back of our net ! RIP Jimmy.
