Backing Gary Caldwell, thanks Matt and good luck.
I can understand the frustration, I don’t believe we have previously had a summer where with a week to go before the first game haven’t made a single signing.

I am sure Matt is also frustrated, and he is holding his nerve that movement will come soon. He will know what has happened to this point and what possibilities exist, where as fans we can only guess who he has spoken to and tried to sign.

As hard as it is we just have to wait and see what happens from here, and hope while we keep trying to make signings we are lucky with injuries in the next month or so. Hopefully key, kite and Jevani are only carrying slight knocks and by resting them they will be available by next Saturday.

If we need another CB with Stubbs record we could look at Paul Downing with over 250 games in L1 and above, and he’s from Taunton… That said, wages would surely be similar to Ray and he was shipped off… Edit, I know there are 4 positions of more urgent need…
I'm wary of sounding like a bitter ex with Downing - so will keep my analysis based in quantitative stuff. 50-odd league appearances in the last five seasons. c. 80% of the appearances you've cited in League 1 happened during or before 2016/17.

I’m not worried about this season as I’ve got faith in the squad that got us up and KMT has done a good job of keeping them together. But of course it’s been a disappointing pre-season with no signings at all. And we obviously need a keeper, that’s a given.

It’s clear and obvious that we have to persuade players to join us a lot more than other clubs might, due to our location and our financial limitations. I wonder how well we do the persuading as a club, and hope the people doing it are getting some training on it - negotiation training or something.

It’s what would happen in lots of other industries and this seems fundamental to the success of our club.

Indeed. I’ve noticed it’s the same people moaning this summer as it was last summer at the lack of “marquee” signings.
Oh yeh?

I’m not sure - obviously it’s not gone right but I think that is (guessing of course) more down to strategic errors than negotiation ability.

Every pre season we’ve had with Taylor I felt like we’d done decent business, even in the weirdness of covid. He’s always seemed to pull extra quality out of the bag that no one could have predicted and usually has avery clear plan of action to get specialists into the areas he needs them (rather than wait and see Tisdale approach).

For whatever reasons the well laid plans haven’t, for the first time in his managerial career worked out (remember as a novice him and Kinder brought some excellent talent in). I’d argue we’ve had some League 1 players join us when in League 2 so my suspicion is that too much weight was being put on us internally that promotion made us a more tempting option despite seemingly having the same budget.

Given that MT was likely to have had an extensive list of initial targets, the fact that they (before he started going on about loans) all turned us down says 1 thing to me - we set our sights too high. Yes location and wages are a factor but not every single time and certainly the likes of Law, Brown, Nombe etc shows it’s not an insurmountable challenge. You could tell 6 weeks ago something wasn’t right - we got promoted before the end of the season with no play offs yet we’re very slow off the mark and with every week that’s gone the situation becomes less and less surprising.

I think the context of the last sentence is the most worrying. This suggests that strong management/leadership needs to be shown by someone quite quickly, either by MT, the Club or Trust Board, to nip an accumulation of issues in the bud.

Peterborough midfielder Ryan Broom has turned down a move to Mansfield after a successful loan spell at a League One club last season.
