Grecian the Lion has had a makeover with a new suit readied in time for Saturday’s home game against Portsmouth.

The suit has been donated by Exeweb.com using the money raised from several months worth of advertising revenue. Delivered by UK Mascots, it was decided with the Club that it would make it’s début on the opening day of the season.

Chris Sumner (for most often it is he in the suit) has been in the suit for as long as Tisdale has been manager. Speaking exclusively to Exeweb.com  he said

I’d like to pass on my thanks to the Exeweb team for purchasing a new lion suit for me to wear on matchdays as I start my ninth season in the role of Grecian the Lion. It’s great to feel a real part of the furniture at the club, and for the lion to last as long as it has. When I first started going to SJP,

club mascots never seemed to last very long, and it was hit and miss as to whether they would be there or not. It’s great to be able to make a difference on this front.

A story not many people know about is why I applied for the role back in 2006 and how I got it. I had a cider-filled day at the cricket and got talked into applying by fellow City fans who were there, and in my sober state I decided to

be true to my word and ended up getting the role! Now, 8 years later, It’s scary how quickly the time has flown, but I have and am still enjoying giving something back to the club I love, as first and foremost I’m a fan and a proud Exonian.

I’m very happy with the new suit, and it was great to give it it’s début outing at home to Portsmouth. I’ve had some great memories in the old lion suits, particularly going pitch side at Wembley (twice!) and hope that this new suit will also have many great Grecian stories to tell!

This is one of many projects that we’ve helped the Club. We’ll also be sponsoring David Wheeler’s shirt again, and looking to help the 1931 fund raise money. We are also discussing how we can help funding for the Light Up the Park appeal.
