Talking of red meat, it's worth bearing in mind that the Rwanda Policy was not a carefully considered initiative designed to make a difference, but something cobbled together during Operation Save Big Dog which involved coming up with random ideas that might restore the Red Wall's faith in their one time hero. Given all this, it's amazing that this is the hill Sunak has chosen to die on
Quite apt given the time of year.

There has been a significant slowdown in the rate of recruits from EU in specific specialities that haven’t been resolved by recruitment from other parts of the world.

Yes, we needed more because of COVID but we’ve ended up with less.

Ah, the Brexit hating Nuffield Trust.

That's a different question.

I think that successive governments have a duty to improve the way we handle asylum seekers. But that improvement is not neatly packaged up as a three word slogan.
There is a political imperative to solve this issue and that imperative will become Labours problem if the current polls are right.
Labour’s laudable aim to clear the backlog and expedite claims quicker doesn’t solve anything if they like this Government can’t remove any failures who will still be entitled to support like free accommodation. If they decide to just let everyone to work and live here to alleviate those costs you then run the risk of that being an even bigger draw to those wanting to cross the channel.
The electorate will not stand for the spectacle of 40-50K illegal immigrants arriving here year after year.

Government made the choice to highlight immigration, and promise to reduce it... and then choose to adopt policies which, by their nature, do not reduce it.

Accept you've been had over a barrel Tavy.

Nobody is forcing these people to get in a small boat.
You think the kids taken on those crossings by their parents are doing so under their own free will? Shame on you.

Oh, I acknowledged that weeks ago Spanks.
They have failed miserably.
However I’m now a bit concerned that some on here think that this thorny issue begins and kind of ends with when and if Sunak loses the next election.
We’re just at the beginning of this era of mass migration flows.

The same electorate who is abandoning the party who've made the biggest song and dance over StOP ThE bOaTs?

I don't see many here denying that immigration will remain an issue forever, it's always been one and always will be. But as Spanks pointed out, the way it's been framed by Rishi et al has only served to make their most strident supporters look pretty damn stupid.

They’re not illegal.

As said before it’s manufactured. We’re on the one hand this fantastic ‘Global Britain’ but we can’t take in some people (not all of whom will qualify to stay) that amount to around 0.08% of our total population!

Why do you think Labour (at least publicly) does not share your ‘progressive’ view on this non crisis?
