Good shouts for The Shins and Blind Melon. Both proper bands, built from the ground up, wrote their own songs and largely ignored by the industry.

Has anyone mentioned Mega City Four or The Senseless Things yet?

Mega City Four were a quality band. Seen them quite a few times supporting Carter. Wiz will be sadly missed.

Most under rated has to be an elastic band - so useful for many things.

Not at all surprised my mention; has yet to be mentioned; thus proving they are indeed the most under-rated band of all time ;)

Referred to as the American Beatles by some critics; and if The Beatles had released their albums they would have had that 'CLASSIC' stamp all over them. Since their incarnation in 1974 through their own brand of power pop music with a hard-edged yet melodic pop sound that combines the tunefulness of The Beatles with the speed and energy of punk rock; the 4 original members to this day are still in this band; (although the bassist did leave for personal health reasons for a time in the 80's); this is a mighty feat in it'self.

2009 saw them release one of the finest albums of the year/decade with thier opus 'The Latest'. Ladies & gentlemen; boys & girls; I give you

[y] Fairly popular with the sort of stoned t*ssers that like Jack Johnson.
Edited for factuals.

I've always thought that Muse are under-rated too.
