Not unheard of but it has been a very long time since anyone set up 2-3-5, with inside-lefts, inside-rights, and the original 'centre-half' position, and probably for good reason.

The formation only really lived on past the 1930s fossilised as shirt numbers, which persisted until squad numbers came to the fore.

Backs have always attacked when they have the opportunity. Scott Hiley was a back who attacked. So was Vinnicombe. And! thousands more. What's a specialist wing back : a winger who defends or a back that attacks?

Sure... But you are advocating 4 at the back. And you thought it was when you watched it. So what's to moan about if it Looked as you thought it should be? And 4 at the back is more defenders than 3!
