If you ignore the chain pubs such as Wetherspoons and Yates, there are only a few places worth visiting in the town centre.
The Trackside, which is on the platform of the East Lancs Railway station has a selection of real ales, and also usually has 3 or 4 real ciders/perrys on offer, last time I was in there they included Broadoak Perry and Thatchers Cheddar Valley. This is about a 5 minute walk from the tram station, in the opposite direction of the ground. This walk will also take you past The Old White Lion, which is best described as "going back in time".
Rose & Crown is probably the best pub on the way to the ground by some distance. The Swan, which has already been mentioned (5 min walk past Gigg) does fairly decent food.
