This is my son's advice - there should be barrels on the slope. Approach the barrels and hold down x - your character should then be able to kick them down the slope and the trench then catches fire - they stop coming then. My son is past this level now, so sounds like it works!

I can't now make Notts County, so haven't bothered to respond to the e-mail. Would be interested to hear what turns up though.
