In this situation it is less good than with Ampadu. If he leaves now compensation is determined by a formula (EPPL?)based on the category of our academy and the number of years the lad has been with us. The money is peanuts; someone else will be able to do the figures but it is likely to be somewhere around 60k upfront. That is why Ampadu staying until his academy spell was over enabled us to get non- formula compensation and over a million. So all pretty depressing.
However the one hope is that this lad is intelligent enough to understand that Premiership clubs want players to have League experience. And that the City youngsters who have had the best careers are those (Watkins, Grimes,Friend,Moxey,Storey,Ampadu to a degree) who have stayed and played for City’s first team. Contrast the likes of Goss and Ellis who moved as academy players and never established themselves as regulars in the top two divisions
