Last season lots of our throw-ins were rubbish

Interesting article here:

This bit caught my eye: "In the Premier League, there are typically between 40 and 50 throw-ins per game. If we split 50 throw-ins equally between teams, that is 25 chances to either keep possession or give it away. While Liverpool were mocked for appointing throw-in coach Thomas Gronnemark, why wouldn't a team want to execute one of the basics of football to an optimal level and maximise every possession?"

Useful for time-wasting even when we're 2-0 down 😡

How about everyone obeying the Laws of the Game for a start?

Very few throws are taken from the point where the ball leaves the pitch, up to 10 metres are routinely "stolen". We are as bad as the rest as referees let everyone get away with it, so this is not a partisan point. And foul throws (the hands not moving from behind the head) are largely ignored by referees; there were several in the Euros games yesterday alone.

"At the moment of delivering the ball, the thrower must:
  • stand facing the field of play
  • have part of each foot on the touchline or on the ground outside the touchline
  • throw the ball with both hands from behind and over the head from the point where it left the field of play
All opponents must stand at least 2 m (2 yds) from the point on the touchline where the throw-in is to be taken."

Yes, apply the rules on throw-ins and, yes, ours have been poor for years. Normally, only one of our players is 'showing', whereas it should be three or four. More movement needed from the mid-field. There should be no excuse for losing possession from a throw-in.
As far as corners are concerned, we need a lot more variety and a bit of invention.

I concur with this. So many times the thrower stands there looking for an option and there either isn't one or there is but it immediately puts the receiving player under pressure.

I do still think that throw ins are a pretty rubbish way to get the ball back into play, mind.
