Gary Caldwell said on Sweeney signing the contract extension:-

Sweens has been first class since I came to the club and he has helped in so many ways.

Off the park, he has been a fantastic help to me, the staff, and to every player who comes to this football club. He really understands the fabric of this club and what is means to play for Exeter City.

We are delighted to sign him up. It’s something that has building up. Sweens would be the first to tell you, we are very challenging for him and really pushed him, and I think he is coming into his peak as a centre half. There is still so much more to come from him and he has taken all of it on-board.

He has trained extremely well and looks in great condition to be ready for the season.

Pierce is clearly also delighted, it’s been a great journey for him

Pierce talking to the Club’s media team said

I’m so happy to get this done, I’m part of the furniture at this football club! It was a no brainer for me really.

I never had any other thought in my mind other than to stay here for the foreseeable future with this management and coaching staff and this club.

This football club means a lot to me. When you’ve been here for so long, you half become a fan. When you’ve played 320 odd games, you become attached. You’re attached to the fans, to the little kids running round asking for photos.

I know 95% of the people that work at this club so it means a little but more to someone who has been here a few weeks. I have to step into that role and share the knowledge of what this football club is about. That’s what the management wants me to do.

It means a lot to me and my family to live down here. My kids were born in Exeter, it means a lot, it’s special.
