Exeter City and 2013 in Numbers

Although 2013 was bookended with victories, inconsistency was the byword for City during the calendar year as sjp_wide_featCity finished the 2012/13 season in mid table and finished the calendar year again around the middle of the pack.

It’s perhaps no surprise to find therefore that City’s record showed an almost identical win/loss record.

  • City’s 2013 portion of the 2012/13 season saw a record of P22 W8 D5 L9 F27 A25 Pts 29.
  • while the current season is remarkably similar P23 W9 D5 L9 F30 A31 Pts 32.
  • leading to an overall record of P45 W17 D10 L18 F57 A56 Pts 61.

The major problem, as is often the case with City, is the lack of a consistent goal scorer (although Tom Nichols is showing enough to give cause for optimism in 2014!). Jamie Cureton may have broken through the 20-goal nichols_davies_subsbarrier last season but his form dipped noticeably after Christmas with just five goals before he left for Cheltenham in the summer. Alan Gow has added goals to his repertoire this season and heads the scoring charts with seven, but he only notched once in the latter part of last season so has eight in total – joint top overall with John O’Flynn who has scored four in each season. Scot Bennett, often called into emergency striker service this season, follows Gow and O’Flynn with seven goals. City were given great assistance in 12/13 by the opposition, with three own goals (the best undoubtedly from York’s Alex Rodman!), but there hasn’t been a single own goal so far this season.tully_Sercombe_thumb

Altogether fifteen different City players scored during 2013, twelve of these players are still at the club. Coincidentally everyone who has scored in the 2013/14 season (nine scorers) has found the net at least twice, although both of Liam Sercombe’s goals came in the same game (the 4-0 drubbing of Scunthorpe).

Here’s to a successful 2014 with more in the “W” column than the “L” column!
