The delay will be on advice from his agent. Players doing well have the right to choose. Waiting to see increases the potential options to choice from. Some players don't want to wait. Let's hope Zak us one of those.
By offering the longer-term deal have we put ourselves in a tricky position?

Presumably, the terms of the 12 month option were agreed last summer and all we'd have needed to do was activate it. The risk then is that if he does well he can leave for bigger and better things next summer.

But, by offering a longer deal, presumably on more favourable terms for Zak, he now has a decision to make on whether or not to accept it. If he doesn't,maybe because he's already eyeing up that move away to bigger and better things next summer, would we want to activate the existing 12 month option, in full knowledge that he's not that fussed about being here? Therefore, could we be letting him go this summer?

I doubt it SRJ. Assuming the option is in favour of the club - then worst case scenario is player has his head turned and the club gets compenstated if they let him go. From the bit I've read I suspect the player is happy to extend if the terms are right, which may be where the potential sticking point sits. The only way the club misses out is if they want to extend but can't agree terms with the player - but even then you have him contracted for next season if you activate the option and there's no way he phones it in if he wants a decent contract elsewhere.

Could've been play of the season if he hadn't had to fill in at right wing back for a while.

The longer we can tie him down, the better. Class act.

Isn't that just the same for every player a year away from their contract ending?
