I've always found the catchment area a false promise on 3 counts especially when used in comparison against other clubs for 3 reasons:

1. The suggested catchment area for the gargoyles extends over a large geographical area, especially when compared directly against the likes of Coventry, Preston or Sheffield.

2. The transport links here in the SW are not the best & relatively expensive. Plymouth has effectively two roads in & the rail links mirror the roads & no airport.

3. Both Plymouth Cornwall are not economic power houses with relatively low pay coupled with high living costs, this leaving little disposable income for the likes of football. Especially L2 when they can watch the Prem on sky.

All these thing put together don't add up to a sleeping giant, more of a comatose dwarf. The Gargoyles need to wake up, smell the coffee & realise where they really sit in the scheme of things a League 1 club at best with us with possibly an occasional foray into the championship. Wishing for a cash rich savior with money to burn will only lead to a repeat of their present pain.

Spot on OTB.....

Why is it that the only sense spoken on these boards come from a yellow perspective.

.....the key word here is potential and sadly for you greeks, Argyle's trumps yours easily, they have a much bigger "potential" fanbase, so they will aways generate more money.....and money is king in football, once debt free, they will attract the kind of investment that the greeks and gulls can only dream of.
Sorry Justin, this doesn't hold any water. There are plenty of examples where the 'potential' fanbase is as, big if not bigger, than plymouth but a good league side has not been sustained. Dudley in the West midlands for one. Salford as well. I was going to suggest Milton keynes too as they are only a league team care of an imported side!! Plymouth Argyle....the new Salford City fc?

The difference is Dudley and Salford are surrounded by long established top teams so competition is a major factor.Milton Keynes as a new club have not established theirselves in the community who are mostly incomers anyway and probably have loyalties elsewhere.

geoff....we're only talking about whether Exeter could sustain more success than PAFC for the next decade or so.

Once debt free, they will generate more money through investment and more through higher gates than you, your trust run club can't spend more money than it generates....
....so Argyle will attract better players than you can, because they can pay better wages, meaning of course, they are far more likely to be more succesful than you.

Money talks......a vibrant, rejuvenated argyle wont stay long in Lge 2, as the feelgood factor returns.....high sixes etc;)

Nothing to do with Salford or MK matey....

Surely, jmgull, we have hyperbole at play here? We don't know when or if Argyle will be debt free nor do we know what turnover ECFC can generate nor even how long - or if at all - Argyle will spend in L2. Or if that will be their final descent. There is as much possibility of Exeter sustaining more success than PAFC in the forseeble future as the converse of that argument ...
