Flying. It's quicker to get home but the whole experience reminds me why I like traveling across Europe by train.

If i had to agree with you we would both be wrong
We get invited to loads of engagement "parties", weddings, birthdays, funerals. Extended families here. Drives me nuts : i always say to the missus "this is the last bleddy one! " but of course it never is. Gatherings here are so bloody formal and boring, and of course not even a drop of the hard stuff in supply. God I hate it! Another bleddy one next weekend!!
The thing that gets me is going to one of those type affairs when you haven't spoken to the person in 20+ years ..... if they were that important in your life then you would have kept in touch at least once a year ?

I've probably spoken more to the local bin men in 5 years than "some" members of my family ! Went to a funeral just before Christmas of her father and his new family didn't even recognise her as the first daughter to him from a previous marriage , was the only funeral we have attended where we were almost laughing when we heard what a great family man he was ....... such a great man he charged his own daughter the £5 taxi fare home from town.

I'm more selective now. It's either real friend or close family or I can't be bothered.
