Here's my tuppence-worth:

Largely under Bayliss we have gone backwards. I'd shunt him out and promote Farbrace, under whom we were making great strides before Bayliss was appointed.

Agreed with the last couple of posters that there has been something of a hysterical reaction here. Our county system is fine, the two division system working pretty well in ensuring the best players are starting to filter to the top ensuring more competitive matches.

The Stokes situation was massive - his removal from the batting and bowling line-up has left us somewhat imbalanced, not only that but our fielding has been below par (something he really adds to the team too) and the general spirit of the team will have been affected. Like Flintoff before him just having Stokes in your line-up, even if he doesn't necessarily contribute too heavily himself, is a fillip to the side.

Obviously most of the more senior players haven't stepped up, which is a crying shame. I wouldn't write off the likes of Cook and Broad just yet, but they needed to show up and haven't done so.

As the last two posters have both said, Australia's attack this series (in generally more helpful conditions) has been superior to ours. All three quicks are injury-prone but all have stayed fit and firing.

And then there's Steve Smith - bloody awful to watch but boy, his reactions are so quick he's in position to play his shot when the bowler is still running in.

This isn't like 13/14, there are a few positives at least to take out of this series so far even if the end results have been comprehensive. Dawid Malan (not good enough, apparently), has already scored more runs in three Tests than any England player managed across five in 13/14. I've been impressed by Overton. Stoneman has shown glimpses, as has James Vince (if he can avoid getting out driving!).

The county system is crap - the standard is so poor & we're never going to produce fast bowlers as most of the championship games are played on green tops in April & September which sees 42 year old Darren Stevens bowling at 70mph up 6fers....

The championship games need to be played in July & August when the wickets are Hard if we're going to produce proper fast bowlers - the fact is one of our fastest bowlers and a fine ODI bowler in Plunkett hardly gets in Yorkshires championship side and took 6 wickets in the championship in 2017

Stokes being out has affected the side massively in terms of balance as he's probably once his blood is pumping our quickest bowler and a top 5 batsman but the bloke simply has to behave he's in a privileged position

Australia away was never going to be easy -

There are positives - Craig Overton has proved he's one for the future & Anderson is still England's outstanding bowler despite it not being ideal conditions & Malan to his credit too has made that no5/no6 spot his for a while on the back of that 100

Vince will make way once stokes returns & Jack leach should of been taken as back up spinner

Not a lot has changed in the Boxing Day test - Aussies well on top and Steve Smith looking like he's going to get another 100 - Broad bowled much better mind

Not convinced Curran is the right option either but limited choice

Gave up watching at 110 - 0 but the bowlers have dragged it back a bit since as 400-0 looked well on. Hard to see the Strines failing to get 500 from here so 4-0 beckons :(

Curran committed the cardinal sin of a wicket taking ball being a no ball but luckily Warner went soon after

But if it hadn't been a no-ball it probably wouldn't have been a wicket-taking ball.

I feckin hate no balls Indo. It would be 10 runs added if I had my way.

Warner would have played the same shot whatever.

You won't win many test matches if you take 3 wickets in a day.

In the main our bowling generally looks so toothless against what is a fairly average Australian batting line up.

Imagine if our guys were bowling against Langer, Hayden, Ponting, Clarke, Hussey, Martyn, Gilchrist etc.

Test cricket should be played on wickets where there is a fair balance between bat and ball this wicket is a road and the Aussies will score 450-500....

It doesn't make for entertaining cricket the first hour was bloody depressing
