How close to the window of the other property is your extension? Generally, there needs to be a severe restriction of light in these cases for it to be actionable (I think there's a technical thing about not going below one lumen of light - which isn't much - over 50% of the room). If you're looking at a neighbour being slightly irritated that they lose a bit of light at certain times of day, that really isn't going to be actionable. The right isn't a general right not to have any reduction in light - it's basically akin to losing a window.

Their house is at right angles to ours across a public footpath about 8 foot wide and set down a good metre and a half lower than our house too. The window is their landing window up stairs. Not sure if that makes a difference. The extension will come out just past their window.
