The first ever Football League fixtures on a Sunday. A idea to boost falling attendances. There was a bit of opposition initially because nothing was open on the Sabbath in those days. It might not seem like much of a big deal now, but was looked at as quite revolutionary by the Football League at the time.
Iirc the experiment ended in early March. Both Sunday games at SJP were postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.

The FA allowed a few 3rd Round Cup games to be played a couple of weeks before on a Sunday.

FL Attendances reached its nadir this season.

A decent crowd for the times at SJP for the League Cup game against Aston Villa. Kellows goal was a great volley.

Shows how times have changed. That's an attendance we'd be disappointed to get against Cambridge on Saturday now.

27th February 1971

Player Manager John Newman makes his last appearance of the season. He would make 4 further appearances at the start of the next season before hanging up his boots. John celebrated his 90th Birthday a couple of months ago. The last survivor of the 1956 FA Final where he was in the Birmingham City team against Manchester City.
I remember seeing him at SJP about 7 years ago, can’t recall what the occasion was.

They say that a manager creates a team in his own image..There are a few in that line up who were tough & would not put up with nonsense on a football field.

Just for @Oldsmobile-88, the Aldershot picture has finally come to light although it's been in the light too much and faded quite a bit.
