So few people have gone through life with such strong morals and touched the lives of so many. One of the most remarkable people the world has known. His dignity allowed the slow battle to bringing equality, I know it's been mentioned on the obituary thread, but rest in peace Nelson Mandela.

A man that was so dignified. Jailed by the apartheid regime, and was so wonderful to watch him walk out of prison. An inspirational leader who had to change a whole ethos of a nation. A difficult job with so many detractors and he did it in a way that help reconcile a country.

Nice enough fella, and the right man at the right time for a post apartheid South Africa, but I`m not sure he "changed the world" as some have said on this thread.

Its when somebody as newsworthy as Nelson Mandela dies that I think its appropriate to dedicate a seperate thread. I dont altogether know how much sympathy I've got given his reported 'methods' in earlier life, but it seems he went a long way to making up for that.

I think hr did change the world, i think his ways, this thoughts, helped change peoples view, i mean to spend so long locked away he came out and put in to action what he wanted to see in his country, i take my hat off to that

RIP Nelson Mandela, A true inspiration to millions in his country, His methods at first are not to my tastes but as i never had to live as a non-white in SA i cannot say whether they were right or wrong. He was a focal point for the Anti-apartheid movement across the world while he was imprisoned and on his release never sort revenge on those who incarcerated him, Instead he set up reconciliation panels and preached that all were equal. Now it will be interesting to see what happens in SA, It has enormous crime and poverty issues and also health issues like a AIDS epidemic. He may have retired from public life but he was the embodiment of SA and people will worry what will happen now.

Well, it won't be run by a load of fat racist Dutch ex-pats, so I think he did his job. (y)

But being run by a lot of corrupt politicians who are lining their own pockets while millions live in extreme poverty

True of many countries globally, and especially true across Africa I would think.

Mandela was certainly guilty of using a bit of muscle when he felt he was under the cosh, but once in power exhibited nothing but dignity.
