THE FA have given the go-ahead for two former Exeter City Football Club directors to perform as a pop supergroup at the club's forthcoming League Two match at Portsmouth.
With the club disillusioned with their crumbling rivalry with traditional foes Plymouth Argyle, the East Devon minnows are trying to drum up interest with the Hampshire based outfit for a whole new kind of rivalry.
Former directors Mike Lewis and John Russell are set to sing a duet of the 1976 Rod Stewart nautical classic 'Sailing' on the Fratton Park pitch on November 2nd. Standing and swaying hand-in-hand, the disgraced pair hope Pompey and Exeter's own travelling band of fans will sing along to the catchy number in unison.
Other City celebrities are getting on board too. The club's Media Operations Manager Uri Geller has agreed to play Stylophone and spoons, while Noel Edmonds will play the Jew's Harp, but only in the introductory bars.
Small plane enthusiast and 1970s hit parade, electro icon Gary Numan will provide haunting backing vocals.
In a coup for the match, former Fulham FC statue, Michael Jackson will abseil simultaneously from the crumbling Milton End of the stadium with the help of three burly sailors from HMS Dork at the local naval base.
Even the local Exeter council are right behind the move to engineer a new rivalry with the Grecian's naval bedfellows.
Exeter City Council Chief Executive Bostock said the Council were right behind the move: "When you think about it, it makes sense. Exeter is the home of South West Water, and Portsmouth is beside the water."
• There are still three places on the supporters' bus for the Portsmouth match. Call the club shop for details.
