I make you right, Jan and here's £5.

The jumper is the outer most garment (assuming you aren't wearing a coat, but that's another matter altogether) and so hides what's beneath.

I'm wearing a jumper over a shirt today. The jumper was ironed, the shirt was not. The jumper is on display, the shirt is not.
