City fans charged with gatecrashing
Wednesday, February 17, 2010,
SEVEN Exeter City fans appeared in court charged with allegedly trying to "gatecrash" the recent match with Yeovil Town after they had been drinking.
The defendants stood together in the dock before South Somerset magistrates charged with the same offence which is alleged to have occurred at Huish Park on January 23.
They were Dean Paul Aplin, 41, of Draycott Close, Exeter; Simon John D*ckinson, 34, of Denmark Road, Exeter; Angelo Grimaldi, 47, of Magdalen Gardens, Exeter; Christopher Charles Hallett, 36, of Lancelot Road, Exeter; John Andrew Kelly, 44, of Prince Charles Road, Exeter; Andrew Stuart Robertson, 27, of Willowbrook Avenue, Exeter and Paul Anthony Simmonds, 42, of Kinnerton Way, Exeter.
The football fans were all charged that at Huish Park, Yeovil, they were drunk trying to enter a designated sporting event during the time that event was taking place.
Aplin, D*ckinson, Hallett, Kelly, Robertson and Simmonds all pleaded not guilty to the allegation.
Grimaldi pleaded guilty to the offence and also admitted a second charge of being in possession of a bottle of vodka while trying to enter a designated sports ground during the time that event was taking place.
The case against the first six defendants was adjourned until Thursday, March 4 when a pre-trial review will be held to fix a date for them to stand trial.
Sentencing on Grimaldi was also adjourned to the same date to enable a football banning order to be drafted.
A police spokesman confirmed following the case that, working alongside the club, the men were banned from St James's Park, Exeter, City's home ground, during matches.
He said: "Until their next appearance, all seven defendants were given bail with strict conditions that they must not go within a defined area of St James' Park in Exeter three hours before, or two hours after, the conclusion of any match being played by Exeter City there.
"They also must not attempt to enter any town or city where Exeter are playing away in a regulated football match on the day of that match and must not enter any town or city where the England international team are playing on the day of that match."
City lost the League One clash against Yeovil 2-1.
